At 4 a.m. in the morning a few Saturdays ago, Brian Farmel was shocked to see a red pickup speeding at an estimated 80 miles per hour in the wrong lane. Farmel, a taxi driver who has seen his fair share of reckless driving, flashed his brights at the speeding pickup truck and proceeded to call 9-1-1, but it didn't prevent the truck from striking a Jeep Cherokee in a head-on accident that killed an Ohio man.
Both of the individuals inside of the Jeep died at the scene. One of the victims of the fatal car accident was a 42-year-old Ohio man, while the other was his 37-year-old cousin from Buffalo.
The taxi driver explained that the speeding truck struck the other vehicle after rounding a curve at full speed. Apparently, the truck did not slow down whatsoever before the collision. The driver of the truck, a 24-year-old man from Getzville, a town near Buffalo, was thought to be dead until a responder at the scene noticed movement. The driver was taken to nearby Erie County Medical Center, and he is still in serious condition.
Farmel said that the events remained "a little fuzzy" in his memory, but that he can still clearly see the truck driver's face burned in his mind. He also expressed his condolences to the families of the Ohio victims.
Currently, police officers are investigating the accident to determine the factors in play during the senseless crash. It appears alcohol may have been a factor in the fatal accident. However, no criminal charges have been filed at this time as the wrong-way driver is still hospitalized. Whether criminal charges are filed or not, a wrongful death lawsuit may be forthcoming.
