Giant Eagle Inc. is recalling its shredded lettuce due to its potential of being a dangerous product for people in Ohio and throughout the nation to eat.
People are being warned not to eat products containing the lettuce, which has been contaminated with Listeria. This outbreak comes shortly after Listeria-tainted cantaloupe caused a national outbreak of foodborne illness, which has proved to be fatal for more than 20 people and has caused more than 100 people to fall ill.
According to a statement issued by the company to CBS News, the Food and Drug Administration contacted Giant Eagle after a random test result from the Ohio Department of Agriculture detected Listeria monocytogenes in one of the company's products.
The positive test came from an eight-ounce bag of Farmer's Market Shredded Iceberg Lettuce coming from Giant Eagle. Recalled products include the large and mini Italian sandwich ring, the large and mini New York sandwich ring, and the large and mini American sandwich ring. Currently, the products have been removed from store shelves as part of a voluntary recall.
A spokesperson for the FDA said the test result is not related to the contamination of cantaloupes and added no illnesses have been associated with the lettuce recall.
However, those most at risk include those with a weakened immune system, the elderly and pregnant women. The bacteria can grow within many different temperatures and can remain on food after the source is removed. Symptoms of those infected include muscle aches, fever and gastrointestinal symptoms.
