Imagine slogging half-asleep into your kitchen in the morning, desperate for your morning cup of joe, only to have it come spraying out of your coffee maker and into your face, giving you serious burns and a wake-up you'll never forget. That's what has happened to dozens of coffee drinkers who purchased defective brewers.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 37 cases of second-degree burns have been reported from Tassimo coffee makers, creating a liability for the manufacturer. The single-cup brewer is now a recalled product, and more than 1 million of them are being taken off the store shelves. The machine is made by BSH Home Appliances Corp., and the brewers involved include those that carry the Bosch and Tassimo Professional label.

It was found the coffee maker sprayed scalding contents, including grounds or tea leaves, burning those waiting for the brew to finish. About 140 people have reported the incident. In one case in the United States, a 10-year-old girl was burned on her neck and face. She had to be placed in a hospital because of the burns. In Canada, a 2-year-old was burned from the spray. The CPSC said the problem seems to occur when the disks clog, break open and spray the hot contents in all directions.

Currently, the recall is taking place in the United States and Canada. In America, the recall effects about 835,000 makers, while about 900,000 are recalled in Canada. In addition to the makers, espresso "T-discs" were recalled because of problem reports. About 4 million packs are currently being recalled.

If consumers have questions or concerns about the product, they can visit its website or call the company.
